DAY 6 June 7th

DAY 6: June 7th

Our accommodation Water’s Edge Hotel was great, fantastic view of the inlet and close to a shopping Plaza. It was also located just a 3 minute walk from the Port City Lawn Bowling club which we visited before leaving. There was a ladies league on the green who invited us in for a ‘roll up’, unfortunately we couldn’t stay but they wished us luck at the Open.

Today was spent mainly in the car driving up to Coolangatta our last stop before we reach our final destination of Mermaid Beach. On the 5 hour trip we passed through Coffs Harbour where we lunched at a swanky McDonald’s, which are known as ‘Macca’s’ in Australia. There is a coffee and dessert bar as well as Build your own Burger bar.

Driving along the A1 there is quite a bit of road work being done in different areas, at one point we waited 20 minutes on a 2-lane section where new gravel was being laid. Boy, there was a lot of transport trucks one right after the other queued up in the line of vehicles heading south.

We passed through many acres of sugar cane that was being encroached upon by the road expansions. We also saw a couple of groups of wild kangaroos in open fields.

Since we didn’t do any sightseeing today we took note of places to visit on our way back to Sydney after the Open – like the Big Banana.

Arrived at the Green Mountain Beach Resort at dinnertime which we splurged on and had Chinese room service. Lights out by 9pm
