OAK BAY LAWN BOWLING CLUB
DRAWMASTERS CHECKLIST
1.
As you arrive, check the blackboard on
the North wall of Anderson House for the Greensmaster’s directions. A red board indicates the green is closed, a green
board – the green is open. Green mats required – don’t lick your
fingers (recent fertilizer application) etc.
2.
The flag locker is #338 and the key is
on the board in the storage room. Put
up the flag and put out the bear and bell.
3.
Ascertain the green in use, the
direction of play and the rink colour for the day and the time of day. (omit rinks 1 & 8 and 9 & 16 unless
pressed for space)
4.
Clear the top of the Drawmasters
cabinet. Take out the board(s)
appropriate to the green(s) being used.
5.
As the tags come in hang them on the hooks
of the greens being set up, according to the tags colour code:
Skip - blue
Third - red
Second - green
Lead - yellow
Assume triples play until draw is closed
and you have a final count.
6.
When you have decided that some rinks
will play pairs, put the tags for those rinks on the Skips and Thirds
hooks. This will assure that we don’t
put two novices at the far end with no one to ask.
7.
You have set up triples and have one
player left. A pairs game and a
cutthroat is the solution.
-
Two players left – two pairs games.
-
Three players left – cutthroat is the
solution.
-
Four players left – a pairs game is the
solution.
-
Five players left – two pairs games and
a cutthroat is the solution.
8.
Instead of asking for volunteers for
cutthroat and losing three Skips, ask for three novices or three Thirds. Take some time to explain the scoring and
the rules (or lack thereof) to volunteers unfamiliar with the game.
9.
Don’t be a hero and step down unless you
really did not come to bowl.
10.
If you have a cutthroat, take their tags
off the board, assign them to the next available rink and rearrange the tags on
the board as necessary before proceeding.
11.
Now that you have decided on the rinks
and the size of the teams on each rink, it is time to set up the draw. Get out the flat blue and red draw tags and the cans appropriate to the maximum sized
team you have set up.
12.
For each triples rink deposit a red and a blue Skip tag in the Skip
can – a red
and a blue Thirds tag in
the Thirds can – and a red and a blue Lead tag in the Lead’s can.
13.
For each pairs rink deposit a red and a blue Skip’s tag in the
Skips can and a red
and a blue Third’s tag
in the Thirds can (see Number 6).
14.
Delegate someone to circulate the cans.
15.
Take the board outside and ring the
bell.
16.
Make any announcements and introduce
newcomers and guests.
17.
Announce which rinks are playing triples
and which are playing pairs.
18.
You could start with calling any
position. My preference is to call the
Skips first so that they are at the rink to greet the rest of their team.
19.
As you call the names turn the tags over
so you don’t lose your place.
20.
Soon after the games start collect the
tags so they don’t get lost in the grass or ditch.
21.
After the game, return the tags to the
players’ hooks.
22.
Return the bear, bell and flag to the
flag locker and lock the locker.
23.
Make sure all the equipment has been
returned to the wagon(s) and the shed, lock the shed.
24.
Secure the premises: are all the taps and lights off; is everything
locked? Check from the maintenance
building East as you leave.
25.
Should you delegate close-up make sure
the person is aware of the complete process.
26.
If anyone is dawdling in Anderson House
make sure they know how to lock the door and that it is their responsibility to
do so when they leave.
Afterthoughts;
Record the number of players and the
weather in the diary found on the cabinet.
