Canadian Nationals needs volunteers

Updated July 24 with call for Drivers and Food Donations. Additional Players’ Club and Flipper volunteers also requested.

The 2017 Canadian National Lawn Bowling Championships will be held at the Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowling Club August 14-19.

This is a great honour for Greater Victoria, but it comes with demanding obligations for all Bowls South Island clubs. The Championships need many volunteers for flippers, servers and drivers, and also food donations.

Flippers Required

Literally hundreds of volunteers are needed – 170 for “flippers” alone. Flippers manage the scoreboards for each game. Thirty games are played simultaneously on the four greens at Juan de Fuca. Each game requires a flipper, with a spare for each green.

Along with the Gordon Head and Burnside clubs, we have agreed to provide the 34 flippers required for Monday August 14. So our club has to supply 15-20 flipper volunteers that day.

This duty comes with the substantial benefit of a front row seat for you at two of the games, one at 9:30 a.m. and another at 1:30 p.m.

Please sign up for flipper duty on the sheet posted at Anderson House, or e-mail Brent Jansen. who is our representative for the Nationals. Here is the list of OBLBC volunteers as of July 24. We could still use more — and we may have to help out with flippers on days other than just August 14.

Players’ Club Volunteers

Volunteers are also needed to staff the players’ tent.

A private tent will be erected on the clubhouse grounds offering shade, all-day refreshments and goodies. A minimum of two volunteers per shift from local clubs will be needed to assist. Duties are shown here. These volunteers need Serving it Right certification. This qualification can be obtained via an online course.

If you are one of our 54 members who volunteered to assist in kitchen duties at our humble club, this is your chance to raise your game and volunteer at the national level!

There are two shifts each day; the first shift runs from 08:00 to 13:00; the second shift is 12:00 to 17:00, every day from August 14 through August 19.

Sign up on the sheet in Anderson House with the times that you can commit to, or e-mail Brent Jansen.

As of July 24, Oak Bay LBC has done as requested and filled most of the server positions on Saturday August 19, but we are also being asked to help out on Monday afternoon and all day Thursday. Please volunteer for these times if you can.

Drivers Needed

Volunteer drivers are needed to meet out-of-town teams arriving at Victoria Airport and transporting them to the Four Points by Sheraton hotel at  829 McCallum Road, Victoria. (Near Costco.)

Oak Bay LBC is designated to pick up teams from Ontario. Details are not yet known, but the requirement is probably for August 11-14.

Drivers receive $20 to cover out-of-pocket expenses.

If you are willing to be a driver, sign up on the sheet in Anderson House, or e-mail  Brent Jansen.

Food Donations

Two to three hundred players need to be served refreshments throughout the day, so the organizers are looking for donated food items. Details are here.

Here’s a thought . . . Far into the future, after years of devoted service to the sport, when your name finally comes up in the voting for life membership in the club, it could tip the scales in your favour if you can say, “Many years ago, I was one of the selfless volunteers at the wildly successful 2017 Canadian Nationals.” 🙂
