Each year Oak Bay invites local schools to come and enjoy a game of bowls. In past years several schools have taken advantage of our offer and we annually introduce some 120- Senior High School Students to our game. Not only do the students learn a new game, but also they become aware of the fact that there is this community-sponsored activity available.
Using Club Volunteer bowlers the students are divided into groups of four and sent to a rink where the volunteer organizes a game of pairs. Since we have only about one hour, we do not really get into coaching. "Here is the bowl and this is how it works. That's the jack and your job is to put the bowl by the jack", is about all of the instruction that we have time for and the game is on. We manage about 4 or 5 ends and then it's time to do a Spider before the students are rushed back to school. Bowls Oak Bay has enough club bowls for every one to have a set.
Our Club has provided this service for several years now and each year our volunteers are amazed not only at the interest and excellent manners of the students but also by the skills developed in that one hour. We are pleased to have the opportunity to introduce the students to our wonderful game.
