Opening Day

The warmest temperature of the year resulted in a large turnout as many members were eager to get back on the green.

We were honoured to have as a special guest Dr. Andrew Weaver, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, who extended his best wishes to all for another season of bowls. He also took the opportunity to improve his “greens game” which, in the absence of Oak Bay Mayor Kevin Murdoch, will definitely allow Andrew to claim his status as the more experienced bowler. Club president Brent Merchant also made a few welcoming remarks which included one of his trademark jokes!

While the following photos will largely speak for themselves, a bit of explanation might be in order for a couple. In the group photo, members are expressing their best wishes to long-time member Lawrie Matheson, a skilled bowler and mentor to many. Lawrie spent opening day in nearby Royal Jubilee Hospital following a health issue from which it is hoped she will soon recover. Another photo shows Jim Sidel modeling his cannabis socks. It’s not clear if Jim is lobbying to have these included in our inventory of club clothing.

We’re underway now for another outdoor season and to veteran members and those who just joined us, best wishes for many happy memories. May your bowls become one with the jack.
