The official opening of the 2026-27 season at our Club took place under sunny skies on a windless day. Eleven rinks of bowls were set up for 66 players along with a short course of croquet for 20 or so players. A number of new members joined the festivities and had a fine introduction to the sport in their first draw.
On hand to celebrate with us were: His Worship Mayor, Kevin Murdoch, Oak Bay Councillor Hazel Braithwaite and the Honourable Diana Gibson, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, Minister of Citizens’ Services. Club President, Lauren Charlton, introduced herself and began with a land acknowledgement recognizing the traditional territory of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.
She proceeded to welcome the aforementioned dignitaries and thanked them each for District and Provincial support of the Club’s Grant applications and licensing to fundraise through 50/50s. Lauren advised members the Club have used past Provincial Gaming Grants funds towards the upkeep of our greens and our most recent District Grant towards the update of our bathrooms.
After O Canada was sung and the flag was raised Lauren asked the crowd assembled to join in wishing long time member Helen Kempster a Happy 90th birthday! Barry Hersh asked to share a story with the group after which PLAY BEGAN. After 5 ends refreshments were served. The kitchen was most ably managed by Garry Anderson, Sandy Hodel and Moreen Tremblay!!
When the second half of play ended members joined for conversation and snacks in Carnarvon House. Thanks to Ian McMorran and Marian Burow for tending the bar for the event.
