Gopal’s Strong Showing at the 2026 Nationals

The 2026 Oakley Woods Canadian National Golf Croquet Open was held in Toronto and featured a strong international field of 30 players from England, the United States, Egypt, and Canada. This year’s event included more highly ranked competitors than in previous editions, with players divided into two divisions—Championship (16) and First Flight (14)—based on World Croquet Federation Grade rankings.

I was placed in the First Flight, which consisted of two blocks of seven players. In the round‑robin stage I finished at the top of my block with five wins and one loss, including several victories over opponents ranked well above me. A few of those wins were especially satisfying, as they came against players who had beaten me in past tournaments.

In the quarterfinals I faced a seasoned, higher‑ranked opponent and was unable to advance further. Although the loss was disappointing, I did play well in that match and the overall result marks my strongest finish in three appearances at the Nationals.

Events at this level demand strict rule‑following, respect for opponents, and full concentration from start to finish. The environment is intense and often stressful, but that pressure is exactly what accelerates learning. Experience gained at tournaments of this calibre is invaluable equivalent to years of development compared with playing socially at the club. Every game forces better decision‑making, sharper tactics, and deeper resilience.

Beyond the competition itself, the Nationals offered everything that makes major tournaments worthwhile: meeting players from around the world, building friendships and camaraderie, and experiencing firsthand the demands of truly competitive croquet.

I’m grateful for the opportunity and determined to return next year with the goal of pushing my game even further.
