Canadian Nationals August 13-19, 2017

This page formerly contained a call for volunteers; now it will contain links to current information about the Canadian Nationals.

Updated August 12, removing the calls for volunteers and adding links to current information where Oak Bay volunteers are involved.

Venue for the 2017 Nationals

The 2017 Canadian National Lawn Bowling Championships will be held at the Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowling Club August 13-19.

Schedule, Players and Results

The daily schedule, the players’ names, the draw and the results for the Nationals are now available on the Bowls Canada website.

A number of local Bowls South Island club members are competing. Oak Bay LBC is not represented, but a former Oak Bay club member, Mary Lou Richards, now of the Cosburn Park LBC, is on the Ontario fours A team.

Flippers Schedule Published

Thirty games are played simultaneously on the four greens at Juan de Fuca. Each game requires a flipper, with a spare for each green. So 34 flippers are required for each of the morning and afternoon sessions.

The schedule for flippers has now been published, showing the times that the 24 Oak Bay LBC volunteers are on duty. This schedule is also available on the Juan de Fuca club website.

Flippers manage the scoreboards for each game. The activities of a flipper at the Nationals have been recently updated with advice on how best to perform these duties.

Being a flipper comes with the substantial benefit of a front row seat for you at two of the games, one at 9:30 a.m. and another at 1:30 p.m.

Players’ Club

A private tent will be erected on the clubhouse grounds offering shade, all-day refreshments and goodies.

Breakfast, lunch and “happy hour” will be celebrated each day with some scrumptious meal items.  Only a limited number of specials will be made available for drop-in diners.  Pre-order ahead of time via e-mail to Eva Craig to make sure your meal is waiting for you.

Information for Players' Club Volunteers

A minimum of two volunteers per shift from local clubs staff the tent. Duties are shown here. These volunteers need Serving it Right certification. This qualification can be obtained via an online course.

There are two shifts each day; the first shift runs from 08:00 to 13:00; the second shift is 12:00 to 17:00, every day from August 13 through August 19.

Oak Bay LBC has done as requested and filled six of the nine server positions on Saturday August 19, as shown on this August 12 (and hopefully final) schedule.

Volunteer Drivers

Volunteer drivers are needed to meet out-of-town teams arriving at Victoria Airport and transport them to the Four Points by Sheraton hotel at  829 McCallum Road, Victoria. (Near Costco.)

Drivers receive $20 to cover out-of-pocket expenses.

Oak Bay LBC is designated to pick up teams from Ontario. Our volunteer drivers have now received their individual schedules.

Food Donations

Two to three hundred players need to be served refreshments throughout the day, so the organizers are looking for donated food items.

Details of food requirements and drop-off times are here.
