2021-05 -03 Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to change our novices program for both 2020 and 2021.
The material you see below represents what novices can in expect in normal times with a full training program in groups, finishing with inter-club competitions among the current year’s novices from the 11 clubs of Bowls South Island.
For 2021 we have replaced our usual novices’ introduction to the game with the program that you see here.
Read on below to see how things were in 2019, our latest “normal season.”

Early season training session

Training and special events for new bowlers
If you are a club member who is new to lawn bowling, you can improve your game with a number of training sessions organized by the club for you. There are also some novices-only competitive events that will introduce you to tournament play.
Instruction and Practice Clinics
Want extra help for your delivery of the bowls and line of aim? For novice bowlers and members who wish to refresh, there will be four training clinics organized by Dolores Troyer, who will be assisted by other coaches.
Every Monday: 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Dates in 2019: May 27, June 3, 10, 17. No signup necessary – just come at 12:45 to be ready. It is possible that one of these clinics will be in the evening rather than at 1:00 p.m., depending on demand.
As a special on Monday June 17, 2019 we expect to organize a fun cutthroat game 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Men’s and Women’s Novice Invitational Fun Day, June 22, 2019
Host club is Vic West. We go as a group with some coaches. Deadline for names is 9:00 a.m. June 15. For details see tournament poster.
Singles Training for all Novices
Three (tentative) dates in 2019:
Wed, July 3 at 1 p.m. Mon July 8 at 6 p.m.
Wed, July 10 at 1 p.m. (if necessary)
At one of the evening sessions umpire Harnam Grewal will explain and demonstrate the proper way to measure the position of a bowl.
Signup sheet will be on the Coaches noticeboard in Anderson House.

Pizza Night 2019
For all novice bowlers and newcomers to the club this season – free pizza for you and your guest! Friday night June 14. Bowl first, then pizza and celebrate with the club members. Arrive at 5:45 p.m.
Novice Bowls South Island City Finals Aug. 17-18 and Aug. 31 – Sep. 1, 2019
The novice woman who wins our club competition is eligible to compete in the BSI Novice Women’s Singles Championship August 17-18 at Canadian Pacific LBC. Entry deadline is August 10.
The novice man who wins our club competition is eligible to compete in this BSI Novice Men’s Singles Championship August 31 to September 1 at the Vic West LBC. Entry deadline is August 26.
