Mavis Beechey

Mavis Beechey was elected to Life Membership in September 2014.

For almost a quarter century, Mavis has devoted her time and energies to the club. She joined in 1990 and was on the Executive Committee before the year was over. She served as Social Convener, Vice-President, President, and Past President during the next seven years. The custom then was for each member of the Executive Committee to spend two years in each position.

During her tenure, she was a central figure in hosting clubs from around the world. In 1993, our club hosted Team Singapore and Team Canada during the Mazda Pacific Rim Games. In 1994, as a special assignment, Mavis was our club’s representative for the Commonwealth Games, coordinating practice sessions at our club for some of the participating teams. We received a certificate from Lawn Bowls Canada in recognition of the support given during the Mazda Pacific Rim Games and the Commonwealth Games.

As an Executive Committee member, she saw to the purchase of the benches placed around the greens. The benches were purchased with donations from club members.

Mavis volunteered for many different activities, year after year. She organized our club’s Garage Sale for 14 years. This was a hugely labour-intensive task. Over that period, nearly $20,000 was raised. Each year, she knitted an afghan for raffle and bowls covers for sale. Since the inception of the Presidents’ Strawberry Tea, Mavis has whipped the cream.

Mavis is the “go to” person for information on people and activities of previous years. She became the club’s memory bank, identifying old photographs, reminding us that the rhododendrons that greet us as we come through the gate were donated by past presidents, and regaling us with anecdotes of the antics of former members.
