The short mat players of Nanaimo Bowling Club invited Oak Bay to visit them for an afternoon of social short mat play. The club responded with a group enthusiast players who drove up to Nanaimo on March 15th.
Two cars carried up the players with 4 players in with Brent Merchant and three players with Andrew Harley. The weather was perfect as we made our way to the Costin Hall in Lantzville. Lantzville is some half hour drive north of Nanaimo. It’s a very cute village with Hall in the centre.
We were welcomed by Bruce McNevin and Shirley Philips. The schedule called for each team to play three eight games of triples. All the teams were mixed up with players from both Oak Bay and Nanaimo. Play commenced at around 12:15 pm and continued until around 5:15 pm.
Lots of good food was made available so that players could keep up their energy during the afternoon of play…….24 ends of play.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was to meet and greet with Jim Brown who was a long time player at Oak Bay Bowling Club and with whom I had many successful short mat tournaments. Jim is an amazing character whose intellect is still as sharp as ever. Jim is 99 in March….it’s hard to believe!
We wrapped the afternoon at around 5:15 and made our way home with lots of daylight left.
Nanaimo has suggested a return visit sometime in the near future probably on the greens; we will see.
Thanks for everybody participating particularly the drivers!
Andrew Harley
