A commemorative plaque was added to the south east post of the first sun shelter today, June 18,2025. Please have a look at it the next time you are at the Club and reflect on the completion of this major legacy project.
The plaque recognizes the grant from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, two very generous legacies from longtime Club members Marion Woiblet and Jennifer Letkeman as well as over 600 hours from Club volunteers.
From drafting the plans for municipal approval, carefully preparing the application for the federal grant, finding a contractor, organizing work crews and tracking the project costs, it was a time-consuming project.
What could over 600 hours of volunteer time be spend on you might ask? Well, Club volunteers hand dug holes for 24 footings (36”x36”x 30” deep), mixed and poured 6100 pounds (3 tons) of concrete, sanded and stained hundreds of feet of timber, removed and replaced soil, removed debris, repaired the lawn and provided sustenance to keep the volunteers energized with snacks, warm drinks and even homemade soup on concrete day.
The municipal inspector was very impressed with the quality of the finished project and signed off within a few minutes of arrival. A few final touches remain which include staining a few areas as well as the addition of coat hooks.
Well done volunteers!!
