2022 55+ BC Games

GOLD medallists in the Mixed Fours: Brent Jansen, Donna Blackstock, Karen Evans and Brent Merchant

Oak Bay wins 10 medals at the 2022 55+ BC Games

The 55+ BC Games took place in a multitude of locations in the Greater Victoria area from September 14 to 17.

Close to 2,300 individuals participated in these games with support from more than 900 volunteers.

There were 22 different sports at the Games. Lawn Bowling took place at the Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowling Club.

Women’s Pairs: SILVER Bobbi-Jean Charlton & Layla Godfrey; GOLD Karen Evans & Anne Murfitt (Lake Hill); BRONZE Brenda Janke, Sandy Hodel (both Victoria LBC)

The JDF volunteers were tasked with an incredible challenge in terms of organization, scheduling, providing assistance, determining the overall winners and more importantly providing a helpful and supportive environment for the participants and the many spectators. Hats off to all the JDF volunteers for doing such an incredible job – thank you!

Thanks also go out to club members who came out to watch and cheer on the various teams  – that support always helps players make better shots and is greatly appreciated.

Karen Heagle was our sole competitor in the 70+ Division. Our club was well represented in the 55-69 Division:

  • Men’s Pairs by Chris Slade & Mitch O’Brien  and Brent Merchant & Brent Jansen;
  • Women’s Pairs by Karen Evans & Anne Murfitt (Lake Hill); and Layla Godfrey & Bobbi Charlton;
  • Mixed Pairs by Bobbi Charlton & Mitch O’Brien; and
  • Mixed Fours by Donna Blackstock, Karen Evans, Brent Merchant & Brent Jansen.

All of above list competed in the 55 to 69 years old Division – even though one of them was just a little older.

Our 80-year-old mystery player revealed
Editor’s Note:

Hint: After punching below his weight with the youngsters in Men’s Pairs, he didn’t win any medals, but . . . he was featured on TV  (Wait for the 1 minute 10 second mark.)

When asked why he was selected to appear on TV, he ventured hopefully, “Good looks?, Superb physique?, Perfect technique? . . .

The general opinion was, “Not likely, otherwise it would have been a frontal view; probably because you were wearing the striking Zone 1 red cap.”

Some of the more unkind club members mentioned that they had heard people asking, “Who was that ass on TV?”
