2022 Canada Day

The Battle of Oak Bay 1st July 2022

Absent members of the club . . . “shall think themselves accursed they were not here.

Before the Battle

The Blue Team triumphs 26-22

2022-07-04 Corrected names and donation information

The weather was perfect for the 24 teams participating in the Canada Day two-bowl six-pack and fund raiser for CHAMP, the child amputee program.

After extravagant claims of “the blue blood of royalty versus rednecks” and “the red badge of courage versus a bunch of blue depressives”, Team Red captain Rod Armitage and Team Blue captain Ian McMorran led their teams admirably. This was one of the closest competitions for the Bulldog Banner ever; both teams were tied with 18 points going into the final round.

Congratulations to the winning team BLUE as they “blew” passed the reds in the final round to win 26 – 22. The Bulldog Banner now proudly shows the blue triangle and Team Blue owns bragging rights until June 30, 2023.

The day was full of fun and excitement with several prizes won by members for “spiders”, wrong bias insurance draws and of course our 50/50 draw.

Oak Bay businessmen made significant contributions to our club event. Tony Tucker of Oak Bay Pharmasave made a $500 cash contribution to CHAMP, which gave a huge boost to our overall club donation. Matt MacNeil of the Penny Farthing Pub provided four $50 gift certificates that were used for tournament prizes. The support and generous donations of these local businesses is greatly appreciated.

We had a good crowd in Carnarvon House after the games and we would like to thank Marion Burow and Ian Capon for serving for us at the bar after a thirsty day on the green!

New members in 2022. For many it was their first tournament.

Old members. (Dare we say “very old” members.) Actually they are still young for senior bowlers; every one of them is under 90 years of age.

Seventeen new bowlers participated in this tournament.

With a record $1970 collected for CHAMP, it was a hugely successful event!

Well done OBLBC!

Footnote

Although all participants agreed they had a good time, after the event there were questions raised about the true nature of Canada Day at the Oak Bay Lawn Bowling Club. On the surface it appeared to be a series of bowling games at the club, but a closer examination of the photo gallery raises questions:

Was it really a fashion show?

Or an exposition of bowling technique?

Was it a COVID anti-mask protest by the fully-vaccinated?

Or lawn bowling gone mad?
