The first Quaddie tournament since 2019 took place on Saturday June 4. Rain threatened towards the end, but not enough fell to stop play.
Thirty-two club members enrolled, just enough to make up eight four-player teams, whose members were drawn at random.
In round one of a quaddie, your team splits into two pairs who go off to play pairs from two other teams. In the next round the team splits again to play a triples game and a singles game. The final event is a fours game. So each team plays five games in all.
The schedule was carefully designed so that every player would play against three different teams, nor would anyone gain any special rink knowledge since no one played on any rink more than once.
No team won every game, and no team lost every game. Players had a 50% chance of winning a prize in this quaddie since not only do the first three teams end up on the podium, the remaining teams are all in a draw for a monetary prize. This lucky team was truly blessed in that it also had the 50:50 raffle winner, last-minute recruit Marian Burow.
New members should note that two of the players who made the podium are in their first summer of bowling; so new players can indeed win prizes. Even if you are an absolute beginner, you should consider enrolling in upcoming tournaments. It’s a chance to meet quite a few club members and — who knows — your own wandering bowl might turn out to be the game winner and you’re in the money.
The next club tournament is Burgers & Bowls on June 19, probably the most social tournament of all this summer, so be sure to enroll for that one. Registrations close on June 13.
