Early morning of Monday July 18th, the dreaded e-mail – a lead in the McEwan Cup Men’s Pairs tournament has had to withdraw due to work commitments. So here we are with no spares to fill the gap – a tournament organizer’s nightmare. These things happen. Moral: make sure you have spares – not always easy. Fortunately, Brent Jansen was able to fill the gap in the tournament.
Mother Nature finally gave us a break. The weather for the McEwan Cup was perfect – warm and sunny with a gentle breeze.
We had 10 teams of Men’s Pairs ready to go. Each team played three matches of eight ends each. With tea/coffee/goodies and breaks between games, eight ends made for a reasonably relaxed day.
The tournament ended with a tight finish for the first-place position. David Anderson with Constantin Botea took first place, with Brent Jansen and Peter Insley coming in a close second. The final position was determined by points differential since both teams won all three games. So Constantin usurped the crown Peter had been wearing since the last McEwan in 2019.
Ron Harmer, playing with Tom Stewart, edged into third place over Chris Slade and Gopala Gowda, based again on points differential.
All-in-all, an enjoyable day with no calls to the ambulance service – thank goodness! (We have called 911 no less than five times this summer.)
After the prize presentations and being finally relieved of my tournament organizer duties, I had a meltdown with a spilled glass of wine (never could hold my drink), which was greeted by a sympathetic Mike Antolin leading a rousing chorus of, ♫”Why was he born so beautiful? Why was he born at all? . . . ” ♫ (Welsh rugby version, so following risqué lines omitted here. Editor)
Many thanks to Garry Anderson and the kitchen crew for providing tea/coffee and goodies – and for rushing to clean up spilt wine. Thanks to the bar tender, Jim Cliff; thanks to Gloria Brown for photographs; Robert Game for helping the set-up; Chris Slade for tournament registration; and Gopala Gowda for developing the wonderful scoring spreadsheet – and thanks to all the players.
We will be donating $50 to the club as part of the entry fees.
