Oak Bay player wins Andy Stewart Australian Pairs

Andy Stewart Australian Pairs winners
Brent Merchant (L) and Harry Walker (R)

The Burnside Lawn Bowling Club hosted the BSI Andy Stewart Australian Pairs open tournament during the evenings of August 22-24.

Sixteen teams registered from a number of clubs in our region. Two and a half teams were from our Oak Bay Club.

“Two and a half” you ask – how is that possible?  Our teams were composed of Brent Jansen and Karen Evans, Ian and Diane McMorran and Brent Merchant and Harry Walker.  As Harry is a member of the Canadian Pacific LBC, I couldn’t count him as part of our club; ergo the half team – but I digress.

Runner-up team
Peter Smith (L) and Jay Huang (R)

In this tournament winners play winners and losers play losers, so each night the teams play a different team. After two nights of play there were four teams that had won two games, eight teams that had won one game and four teams that had no wins.   Amongst the other games, the four teams that had won two games played for the trophy.

The pairings were: Ian & Diane McMorran playing Jay Huang & Peter Smith from Gordon Head; and Glenn Taylor & Pei Mei Chia from Burnside playing Harry Walker & Brent Merchant from Canadian Pacific and Oak Bay. Both Peter & Jay and Harry & Brent won their games. To determine the winner it came down to the total points won in their three games. Harry and Brent had the highest point total and won the trophy while Jay and Peter came in second.

Many thanks to all of the members of the Burnside LBC for putting on a wonderful tournament, providing a hotdog BBQ and being such gracious hosts – well done folks.
