Carnarvon Open Triples Tournament

Tournament winners L to R: Marcia Thorneycroft (Vice), Brent Merchant (Skip),
Layla Godfrey (Lead)

Runners-up: Robert Game(Lead),
Brent Jansen (Skip),
Dianne McMorran (Vice)

Third place: Garry Anderson (Vice),
Ronnie/Cheryl Stinson (Lead),
Mort Nelson (Skip)

The Carnarvon Open tournament August 1st, our first triples tournament in two years,  produced an equable result; no one won all four games and no one lost all four games.

You couldn’t blame this outcome on the tournament managers fixing the draw to “balance” the teams because the skips drew their playing partners at random on arrival.

Team #8 of Brent Merchant, Layla Godfrey and Marcia Thorneycroft were the clear winners with ten match points.

Team #2 with Brent Jansen, Diane McMorran and Robert Game were one point behind to gain the silver medal.

There was a bit of a mix-up for the third place with a rushed, incorrect announcement immediately after close of play. However, after “making the list and checking it twice” later that day, it was a three-way tie for third place on match points.

Teams 5, 6 and 10 all had seven match points. Team #10 of Mort Nelson, Garry Anderson and Cheryl/Ronnie Stinson had the best + 8 point differential to claim the bronze.

One third of your entry fees went to CHAMP,  an organization that our club has supported for many years.

Brent J. struggles to read all that joined-up writing on the cake. FYI Brent, it says “Oak Bay Lawnbowling We’re back!”

Half way through the tournament, the long-awaited re-opening of Carnarvon house was celebrated by free cake for all.

This tournament was notable for having an appointed photographer. Club member Gloria Brown travelled more than 50 metres all the way from her home on Eastdowne Road to the club and took a different type of picture of the players in action than we usually see. The norm is distant views of the green with scattered players, many with their backs to the camera, because the photo is normally taken by a player snatching a moment between ends.

Gloria made a point of catching the often contorted grimaces of the bowlers at the moment of delivery.  We have discovered that absolutely no one smiles at the moment the bowl leaves their hands; we see agony, determination, revenge and possibly despair, but no smiles.

The album of 107 photos could be edited down but that would take time, and this one-week late narrative is already more of an historical report than a news item.  So all 107 are there in the gallery below

If you don’t like your photo, you could probably negotiate the price of a non-fungible token (NFT) with the club and with Gloria, which would give you the right to control that specific image and maybe even have it deleted, if you don’t want it displayed.

This article may be getting a bit off topic . . . You may be more interested in the photo album and the detailed results.
