On Saturday, February 4th, we celebrated Groundhog Day and I am happy to say we did not see our shadows and nary a drop of rain fell on our heads – could things get better early in February. 

We had a total of 44 lawn bowlers, croquet players and spectators enjoying the 9 degree weather.  A new variation on lawn bowling was introduced to members- yardstick bowling. A 3 foot piece of string is attached to a golf ball at one end and a nail at the other end. Many thanks to John Dolman for his work on attaching the nails and golf balls to the string.The bowl closest to the nail ( which acts as the Jack) gets 3 points and all other bowls within the 3 foot radius of the nail/jack get one point each. This is good training for our summer season in that it helps teach members the importance of learning how to fine tune their pace so that their bowl lands within 3 feet of the jack.  We will also be using yardstick bowling in our instruction with novice bowlers. Some of the local clubs have a regular weekly draw of Yardstick bowling so we will leave that to our membership to see if this is something they wish to develop. After the games participants gathered in Carnarvon House for refreshments and social time.  The Games Committee hopes to hear your feedback on this event. Thanks to all that participated.
