Daily Draws

Seven “draws” every week for casual games

DailyDrawDrawmasterOBLBC

Each week, from May through September, there are two Morning Draws, two Afternoon Draws, two Evening Draws and the very popular Special DrawA drawmaster is in attendance to organize these Draws. There are also three Drop-in games each week, organized by the players who attend.

The Sunday morning cuthroat tournament, introduced in 2017, has also proved very popular. The tournament is scheduled for seven Sundays in the 10-week period between May 26, 2019 and June 28. See the tournament poster for the exact dates. This tournament replaces the regular Sunday morning draw on those days.  There is a limit of 48 players. You can be sure of playing if you sign up online in advance. Advance online registration will cease June 1. Thereafter you can sign up June 3 when you attend or, if unable to attend on that day, contact Kay Alexander to register.

The Morning Draw and Afternoon Draw are usually 14-end triples games that last about two hours. In the evenings, the games tend to be shorter — 10 or 12 ends. These draws are casual games that are organized to suit however many players show up wanting a game.

Playing in the daytime and evening draws is the best way for new club members to introduce themselves to the game and to the club. Other players will give you any guidance you need and you are likely to meet a few more of the club members with each game you play.

You need to be present by “Tags-in Time” in order to play. Just sign up by giving your club name tag to the drawmaster.

Club members can organize their own games at any time but, as a matter of club etiquette, you should join the club draw if you plan to play within half an hour of the draw time.

Consult the Daily Draw Calendar for season start- and end-dates, and any variations in the Daily Draw schedule. Both the short mat daily draws (pale green on the calendar) and the outdoor daily draws (dark blue) appear on this calendar.

How the Draw is conducted

The drawmaster puts equal numbers of blue and red disks into three cans for the draw. Teams are drawn in three rounds: first draw is for skips; then thirds and seconds; and then leads. When you draw your disk from the can, it will tell you which rink you are playing on that day and whether you are on the red team or the blue team on that rink.

If the number of players on the day does not divide exactly by six, the drawmaster may create one or more pairs games, or three-player cutthroat games.

Greens, Rinks and Directions of Play

The availability of either or both greens is indicated on the blackboard outside Anderson House, and on every page of this website, by the Green (open) and Red (closed) panels.

Greens maintenance takes place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, usually between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Maintenance takes precedence over play. Be prepared to move your game to a different green, if it conflicts with maintenance activity.

The boards around the rink that support the rink markers are painted with bars in four different colours. Each triplet of one colour defines two rink boundaries and the rink centre line.

We set up all the rinks on the same colour for the daily draws. The colour chosen depends on the time of day and the day of the week. Varying the boundaries in this way spreads the wear evenly across the green.

The rink colour of the day and direction of play (either north/south or east/west) are shown below and are also displayed on sheets in Anderson House and in the equipment shed, or see here for a printable image.

Morning Draws

The Morning 10:00 a.m. 14-end draw takes place twice a week. Tags in by 10:00 a.m. Games start at 10:15.

For the Sunday Morning Draw, there will be a Cutthroat tournament starting May 26, 2019 and running until to June 28, which replaces the regular draw on those dates.

Afternoon Draws

The Afternoon 1:15 p.m. 14-end draw takes place twice a week. Tags in by 1:15 p.m. Games start at 1:30.

An experienced drawmaster is present for the daytime draws each week. On Tuesdays and Fridays the greens are open for players to organize their own game at 1:15; there is no drawmaster as such. There are league games in the morning on Tuesdays and Fridays and so the turnout for the midday draw tends to be less.

During tournaments, these afternoon draws are subject to availability of rinks. Check the Calendar and/or the Club Tournaments pages to see when these events are scheduled. Three BSI Tournaments are also scheduled at Oak Bay each year, which will likely occupy both our greens.

Thursday Special Draws

This Special Draw August 16, 2018 attracted 60 players.

Every Thursday there is a Special Draw. See 2019 poster. Tags in by 10:45 a.m. Game starts at 11:00 a.m.

Triples teams are arranged by the same random process as the daily draw.

Two 8-end games are played, with a break for lunch between games. Position sharing is allowed. Bring your own lunch. After lunch, your team will face different opponents.

Teams keep track of their scores to earn small prizes, which are funded by the $2 entry fee per player each week.

The Special Draw is the most popular draw of the week — and its popularity is increasing year by year. In the 19-week  2018 season, up to 60 players have taken part, with a record average weekly attendance of 49. Members really like this event. To learn more, see News Report on a typical Special Draw.

Evening Draws

Visitors Night August 4, 2018

There are draws every Wednesday and Friday evening. Tags in by 6:15 p.m.

The Friday evening draw is our Visitors Night. This particular draw is open to members of the public at no charge. Those who have not played before should arrive at 6:00 p.m. for some elementary instruction in the game. To get a fuller picture of what happens on Friday evenings, see News Report.

A social time follows Friday evening games. Some Friday nights you can just bowl and not have to worry about dinner for the family because there may be pizza . . .
