Short Mat Tournament Christmas 2016

The one-day Triples tournament held on Sunday, December 11, starting at 8.30 in the morning, was concluded successfully shortly after 5.00 o’clock. There were 18 entries divided randomly into six teams that played each other on a round-robin basis, five 7-end games per team. It was a long day, but full of friendly rivalry, fine shots and enjoyment. At the end, there were four teams with identical scores! The final standings were:  June Klausen with Harnam Grewal and Robin Hittos in first place, Andrew Harley with Pat Thomas and Steve Rikley in second place, and Brent Jansen/ Louise Mason, Marilyn Turpin and Norma Alison in third place. Brent Merchant, Karen Evans and Kay Alexander were the fourth team with the same number of points as the first three. The remaining two teams were Svend Klausen, Garry Anderson and Kate Kajewski, and Anne Bodely-Scott, David Anderson and Lila Mee/Tanis Ranger.

Chris Slade, who presented the prizes, was thanked for all his hard, painstaking work in making the tournament possible.  Thanks are due also to Kay Alexander for laying on the coffee which was available to players all day long; to Donna Blackstock and Gary Anderson for looking after the bar, and especially to Marilyn Turpin, Lila Mee and Tanis Ranger for stepping in at very short notice to help fill unexpected gaps in two of the teams. Lastly, the invaluable help given by Ray Dilba (Karen’s husband) in raising the baseboard heaters in Anderson House to avoid damage to bowls going off the mats is deeply appreciated.

Finally, a very pleasing and greatly encouraging feature of the tournament was the performance of the three members new to Short Mat play – Lila, Tanis and Steve. They more than held their own against the more experienced bowlers, and made many a beautiful shot. It all augurs well for the future of the game at the Club.
