Burnside LBC hosted the Andy Stewart Australian Pairs tournament on August 19-21. This tournament is always a “sell-out” so the organizer, Glen Taylor, had 16 teams play their games starting at 3:00 pm and another group of 16 teams starting at 6:00 pm. There is one game per day with winners playing winners and “silver medalists” playing “silver medalists”. These two groups compete for prizes within their own group over the three days of play.
A number of Oak Bay teams were entered and unfortunately our members in the early draw did not reach the podium stage. In the later draw our Oak Bay teams fared much better. Karen Evans and Bobbi-Jean Charlton won the first 2 game high award, while Mort Nelson and Al Wood won the second 2 game high award. Brent Merchant and Harry Walker (from Canadian Pacific LBC) finished second in the tournament winning all three of their games. This tournament is always fun and a number of novices from other clubs participated so I hope next year we have a large turn out from our club.
