Bowl for the Cure

Once again a large number of South Island lawn bowlers came together to raise money for the fight against cancer. It wasn’t all fundraising but also an opportunity to compete one last time against friends before many of us part ways until next spring.

On Saturday morning the clouds opened and it poured. Lawn bowlers, being a hardy bunch, played on, then went home and dried out. Sunday saw a mix of sun and cloud making for ideal bowling weather. The tournament had no umpires nor prize monies. Nevertheless one team finished on top although the real winner was the effort made to contribute to the fight against cancer. One of the following photos shows three members from a Lake Hill LBC team wearing shirts with numerous coloured ribbons sewn in a circle. Each ribbon represents one type of cancer.

The event began with the traditional spider each day and on Sunday ended with a draw for numerous prizes. The tournament was once again managed by Harry Harrison (shown in photo holding a bell) along with helpers too numerous to mention. It was a big operation with Juan de Fuca LBC, as always, doing the heavy lifting.

Thank you to everyone who made this final weekend to our outdoor season the success it was, whether through your labour of whatever type, or the donation of prizes, and purchase of various draw tickets. Enjoy the off season and see you again on the green in 2017!

26 September note
Two thousand and sixteen was the 14th annual Bowl for the Cure in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. This year’s total amounted to $5,344.50 bringing the total since 2003 to $72,170.30. That’s an impressive sum which shows that as a community, lawn bowlers have made a significant contribution to what Terry Fox began in 1980 with his Marathon of Hope.
