Report by Brent Merchant
The Juan de Fuca Club hosted the yearly BSI men’s Quaddie on Friday July 21. Ten teams totalling 40 men participated in the tournament. With a Quaddie each team forms two teams of pairs in the first game. The second game sees three members of the team playing triples and the fourth team member playing singles. In the final game all four players play against another team.
There was only one Oak Bay team playing which was comprised of Brent Merchant, Gopal Gowda, Doug Francis and Harry Walker (from the CP Club but he is a close friend to our members). So what happened at this prestigious event you might ask? We got lucky. In the pairs event, Doug Francis and Brent Merchant scored a perfect end of 8 points. Our team went on to win all 5 games.
Prior to the announcement of the tournament results the 50/50 draw was held and yes our team won the prize. The tournament results were then announced and our team was awarded the trophy. Not sure we will ever get that lucky again but it did feel good. Thanks to all the JDF volunteers who made the tournament so successful and friendly. Hats off to Annie Mathie for umpiring the games.
The results were:
4th Place: Harry Harrison, Dave Mathie, John, Jack Robertson
3rd Place: Shane McRae, Barry Ming, Nick May, Bawan Saravanabawan(no picture)
2nd Place: David Gardner, Kyoshi Sekiguchi, Peter Smith, Jay Huang
1st Place: Harry Walker, Gopal Gowda, Brent Merchant, Doug Francis
