While many of us were distracted with the Greenslade Men’s Triples at our club during the past weekend, a Bowls South Island novice women’s tournament was taking place at the Canadian Pacific Lawn Bowling Club. At this competition Oak Bay was represented by Layla Godfrey, our novice champ.
Perhaps rather than see this competition through the eyes of a reporter, it would be better to let Layla’s own words speak for themselves in telling us what it was like. Layla has kindly given permission to share her experience below which she originally sent to a fellow club member. Thanks Layla and well done!
The tournament was a great experience for me. After 5 games in two days I was 4 wins 1 loss in my division, which put me in 2nd place in the division. I played off against the 2nd place in the other division on Sunday afternoon for the 3rd/4th place and lost that game, so was awarded 4th in the tournament. I loved learning about proper tournament play, and found having a support person (Bobbi-Jean Charlton) there for all my games was invaluable. There were lots of pictures taken and I was given a special Bowls pin and a cash reward for my 4th position win! Lots of fun, some very good play and a great weekend all around.
