Under the direction of Joan Firkins, President of the Rotary Club of Oak Bay, we welcomed 27 Rotarians to a “Pizza & Bowls” night at our club. Joan was assisted by a number of club members, each assigned to a rink to provide assistance to our guests.
Donna Blackstock first gave a description of the game as only Donna can do, making it sound fun before our guests could confirm that it is in fact a very enjoyable activity. Lawn bowling might look like a sedate activity but as many of us know, it requires considerable physical and mental skill to achieve success.
Despite Donna’s best efforts the first couple of ends resembled organized chaos but then something happened. These folks, although new to bowls, quickly started to figure out a correct aiming line and weight, and before long we were marking numerous touchers.
The Rotary Club of Oak Bay in conjunction with the District of Oak Bay raised funds for the construction of the children’s water park at the west end of our facility. The Rotary club continues its fundraising to this day in order to maintain the Rotary Water Park. Thanks to this water park we often see little tykes peering over the fence, curious about what we’re up to. Hopefully one day they too will find the same pleasure in bowls that we and our Rotary friends have.
