Results are now in. The team of Mary Wright (White Rock LBC), Donna Blackstock (Oak Bay LBC) and Anne Van Bastelaere (Sidney LBC) had a great run at the Canadian Senior Triples Championships in Beaconsfield, Quebec. They finished on top following round robin play which put them into the playoffs where they competed against the Ontario A team for the Gold/Silver medal.
Donna can fill us in on the details upon her return but some things can be discerned from the information published on the Bowls Canada Boulingrin website. For example, the BC team lost to the Ontario A team in round robin play by a single shot.
BC’s better shot spread put them on top following round robin play.
Unfortunately, in the Gold/Silver medal game the Ontario A team once again defeated BC, and once again by a single shot.

While it’s got to be hard to accept knowing how close they came to winning the gold medal, it doesn’t take away from the impressive achievement they earned. Well done to all three of these fine representatives of our province.
As one of our top coaches, Donna has been known to refer to “teaching moments”. While these women might have nothing whatsoever to reflect upon, for many of us who lose a game by a single shot, we can find ourselves navel gazing and asking whether there were teaching moments. We ask ourselves, what would have happened if only we had taken a little more time visualizing a certain shot, were not so quick to agree with our opponent on the shot count, or heaven forbid, didn’t launch that bowl on a wrong bias?
Two games that came down to a single shot difference are enough to make anyone wonder where some small detail could have made the difference between silver and gold. Perhaps it’s best that Mary, Donna and Anne do not reflect too much on this but instead consider how many of us back home wish we had their skill to participate at the national level and finish with the success they enjoyed.
